Advice for a new HR Generalist

Posted about 1 month ago I have been a HR Generalist since late spring of 2009. This is my first time in HR. Prior to this position I was in payroll and customer service. I have a degree in Human Resources Management and I passed the PHR exam as a student right after I graduated. At first I was glad to be a HR Generalist but I had no idea it would be this tough. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy it but on some days it can get overwhelming. I am open to any tips or advice to make my job easier. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Remember, it is just a job. There are days where you will win battles, days where you will lose battles, but in the long run you will win the war. You are in it for the long haul and you have to figure out what is the prize at the end of the tunnel, (generally in Hr, it is helping others out ) and the principals for which you stand for. Enjoy the victories and forget about the losses. Remember, George Washington lost more battles then he won and look how that turned out. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I have seen srtoady give the excellent advice numerous times that a person should carefully examine which field of HR they are most attracted to and most comfortable in. If you are finding that being a Generalist just has too many tasks, maybe you should seek to narrow your focaus once your local job market improves. You may prefer just recruiting and interviewing, or just maintaining the HRIS, or just coordinating compensation and benefits. If your goal though is to one day manage a whole HR department, then I would advise you continue to be the best generalist you can. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I have been in HR as an administrator/manager for almost 1 year and there are certainly days when I leave feeling that I want to do something else and then other days feeling that I am happy with what I do. I know it is like that with anything. I know for a fact that I hate payroll (numbers and me do not mix) and I am still feeling out what part of HR I like the most or if doing a bit of everything is where I want to stay. We'll only know that with experience. Good luck and know that you aren't alone! |

| Posted about 1 month ago I know exactly how you feel. I've been an HR Generalist for 3 years now. I love my job and the challenges it brings. And yes there are days where I just want to run and never come back, but in the other hand there are those days where you feel and now you've made a difference. I agree with the previous blogs, you should decide if being a generalist is what you want. Do you love being challenged? I wish I would tell you it will get easier, but it doesn’t. I believe that is the reason why I love my job, I love the challenges.
