| Description: | Human Resource Champions issues a challenge to HR professionals: define the value you create and institute measures for your performance, or face the inevitable outsourcing of your function. Ulrich identifies four distinct roles that human resources staff must assume-strategic player, administrative expert, employee champion, and change agent. He provides hands-on tools that show HR professionals how they can operate in all four areas simultaneously and offers specific recommendations for partnering with line managers to deliver value and make their organizations more competitive. |

Dave Ulrich is a master at helping HR folks do the one thing that is so elusive....finding out how to convey your worth to you managment as well as your employees. I've used this book several times in various HR courses I've taught and recommend it as required reading for all HR people, whether you're just considering HR to the seasoned professional. It will help you get better at your job and if you're already at the top of your game, it will help you stay there!

I was very impressed as I read this book. First of all it proudly wears the Harvard Business School Press insignia, so that says a lot right there. The book gives valuable examples of strategies and systems that Fortune 100 companies have implemented in their pursuit to greatness, like Hewlett-Packard, Clorox, FedEx, and Motorola. No need to reinvent the wheel, this book has some valuable answers to serious HR strategy questions from a senior HR...and almost a systems engineer perspective. As I read chapters 1 – 2 a light bulb went on as it summed up the “HR Business Partner” role into four categories:
1. Becoming a Strategic Partner
2. Becoming an Administrative Expert
3. Becoming an Employee Champion
4. Becoming a Change AgentHuman Resource Champions is technical. It’s got loads of diagrams, tables, and even self-evaluations and surveys that the reader can use in his/her own organization to determine where it stands in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. So it’s not for the faint-hearted, as it has quite a textbook feel, but for those who really want to strive for HR excellence along side line managers and senior managers alike, I highly recommend it. Every mid-level and senior-level HR manager should own a copy.
