    This is an outstanding book that is very interesting and fascinating reading. The fact that the book is based on five-years of research makes the research findings and conclusions credible and believable. This book answers a fundamental question: "Can a good company become a great company?" I also enjoyed the case studies inside it which greatly reinforced the author's message.

    I especially enjoyed the topics on hiring (having the right people on the bus and on the right seats and the wrong people off the bus) and the Hedgehog Concept. The Hedgehog Concept basically says that if you can't be the best in the world at your core business, then it can't be the basis of a great company. You need to have a deep understanding and incredible simplicity. You need Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs) sitting in the middle of your three circles. Another interesting finding is on leaders that drive great companies. Jim Collins identifies the Level 5 Leadership who typically is self-effacing, quiet, reserved, shy and have a blend of personal humility and professional will. They are ambitious for the company and what it stands for and do not seek personal glory or self-aggrandisement.

    I reference this book a lot when conducting research for my classes through my Bachelor Degree program. This book makes you really think in depth on how to move your employees and get them on board from interviewing to motivating. I recommend this book to anyone looking towards a career in management. It makes you "think outside the box".

    This is not only a good book it's a great book! The owners of the company I use to work for had all their managers read this book. It was suggested that all employees read but not a must read. The Hedgehog concept was applied in our business for 4 years.

    This is a must read for anyone in the business world. The priniciples are sound and Jim Collins backs up his assessment of great companies by statisical and imperial data. Some of the book is slow reading and his comcepts are different which you must get used to. Overall, a great read for anyone that wants to learn and strive for excellence.

    Truly one of the best books in the category. From the detail researched to the concepts and theory it develops. A definite must read for any executive at all levels of management.

    I believe a group formed around the concepts of this book is a wonderful and productive use of time.

    Any ideas on a name for this group?

    ::"GOOD TO GREAT"::
    I read it when i didn't know much about management. Even at that time, i was pretty impressed by the book and was able to understand the theme :Good to Great"
    There is so much to learn from it. The auther, himself being a teacher, has indeed kept the language very simple. Each and every step of his research, is very clearly mentioned and all of his infrences are properly backed up by facts and figures.
    A must read for all..be it students, researchers, Professionals....Every one will enjoy it...

    I am not generally a fan of business book sensations (to wit: Who Stole My Cheese and Fish), but this book broke that mold. Incisive, interesting and relevant, it isn't another conglomeration of wordspeak, but actually has something you may want to hear. Highly recommended!

    Jim Collins does a great job simplifing the business model and describing the characteristics of great leadership. I have read this book several times and get something out of it each time. As an HRM, I especially liked how he cuts to the heart of the matter in regards to hiring the right people and "having the right people on the right seat on the bus." Just because someone is not excelling does not mean that they must go. It may be that we put them in the wrong position. We hired them because we saw something in them that we liked. The answer may be something as simple as moving them to a different department or task and letting them take off.
    I definately reccommend this book to inspire outside-of-the-box thinking as it relates to HR.

    The book is really a great learning tool. I really enjoyed reading the case studies, and seeing where we could implement further ideas and better ourselves.

    One of the best books I've read on management strategy and leadership. I love how the research group starts from 1,435 companies, and goes through a series of 4 cuts to end up with the top 11 companies who the author considers "great" based on several criteria. I'm fascinated with his definition of a great leader (humility + will), his hedgehog principal, and his bus analogy (getting the RIGHT people on the bus, and not to fill a position until you find the right person (never settle for less than exactly who you want). This book is a MUST READ for all HR professionals and managers, as well as for anyone in business.

    If I could only read one business book, this would be it! The principles are so applicable to all you do and how to be the best at what it is you want to pursue. My favorite thought from the book is in getting the right people on the bus and then figuring out what seat they need to be sitting in.
