5 Job Hunting Mistakes that Scream "I'm Unprofessional"
Peter Vogt | MonsterTRAK Career Coach
April 07, 2009
In most job-filling situations, the employer has the luxury of choosing from several well-qualified applicants, all of whom could probably do the job. That’s when the little things, like the common but often unrecognized mistakes described here, almost always come into play. Make sure you avoid them, so they don’t cost you a shot at the job.

Most of these I can see but in line with the answering machine message, that implied that ones personal life is also under scrutiny. So that also sends me a clear message that the fact that I am a 25 year accounting professional (female) 51 years old and I happen to ride a motorcycle that somehow knocks me out too? Sorry but that's CRAP !!!
And yes, deal with it people, I have to ride my bike to interviews because I have been out of work for so damn long that I have lost my car. Might as well just give up looking right? No one wants a biker bitch for an accounting manager right?
Well screw you HR managers that have their heads up their asses.
I have an interview for a State job on Tuesday and yes I will ride my bike. I will also wear my skirt under my jacket and then put my hose on underneath my jeans which I will take off and slide my skirt into place, take my leather jacket off and put my professional blazer on before I go into wrap my hair around the back of my head
And guess what? I won't get that job either. I am too old, too experienced, my voice is too deep (SERIOUSLY???)
So screw all of this game playing BULL
AND I have also been told that hiring managers YAWN at the site of a thank you note as well. So who do we listen to? I have sent thank you notes since before the use of the internet and emails. Handwritten ones at that.

This info might still be relevant, but the people that need to read it are the ones who haven't. I think it would have been helpful to give more information on how to write a thank you and if sending a thank you via e-mail is ok. Being in HR I have been asked that question quite a bit.

This is a great article, especially the point about proofreading your resume! I had a resume come across my desk from a lady who claimed a high degree of "aaccuracy." Just because you think you may have spelled something right doesn't mean you should forget using the spellcheck!

This is so important and I see the email mistake all the time and when calling for phone screenings I get answer tones and I think...did I make the right decision in selecting this person. If you don't think this stuff still happens, you are delusional.

@PetcuLuiza Sorry to break it to you, but candidates use those email address and voicemail messages beyond reason... I think this article is very relevant

Being the manager recrutiment, I think this is good. It really happens but after all interviewee confidence tells what the person actualy is.So these points counts but not all in all.

Oh! God. I didn't know that so trivial things would matter. But good, atleast I know now and would not make such mistakes when I go for a job. Thank you

Oh, c'mon.....these are not MISTAKES!!!! these are silly reasons invented by some narrow minded or bored managers in order to give a more or less believable explanation for the spur-of the moment decisions they make.
I have been both in the position of interviewer and interviewee. And let me tell you that you are WRONG.
People applying for serious jobs DO NOT have silly e-mail addresses of voice messages. As for the thank you letter....managers almost never send thank you but we do not need you letters for the rejected candidates. So why bother?
So, in the REAL-REAL world other things might jeopardies your success in an interview. Not these really silly motives.
IMHO. Thank you.

Great article. Sadly such reminders are still needed even in these times.

Nice article, I would also add that musical call-tone (that a caller hears when they dial your number) should be mentioned along with the sill answering machine message.

Good Article! I agree and as a recruiter I have encountered many of these types of applicants.
