Inter Valley Escrow, VP OperationsSummary: Shortly after I assumed full responsibility for HR at my company due to cutbacks, I was lucky enough to have Todd as an instructor at CSUN's Roland Tseng College in the HR certification program. Todd did a great job helping me grasp all the basics of workers' compensation, one of the areas of HR where I had the least experience. Since then, he has become the "go to" person for all things HR, and I would recommend him as a resouce to any of my colleagues.

Athena Bressel-Garrett, SPHR
Child Care Resource Center, HR SupervisorSummary: Given his "real-world" experience, passion for HR, and ability to captivate the attention and enthusiasm of his students, . . . he was the teacher that students "couldn't get enough of," . . . regularly continuing their questions and discussions with him as they followed him out to his car after class! Todd fueled my passion for best-practices HR Management, and allowed me to see how my strengths, and what I had to give, could translate into delivering exceptional, bottom-line, business results. I humbly, and with great admiration and respect, recommend Todd Ferguson as an exceptional business leader, educator, and "HR Guru-extreme!"

I think that people should be able to expect privacy when they join a social network and HR recruiters should not use this information to make characters assessments on applicants.
When people apply for jobs, they have an expectation that the information they provide will be used to assess their skills, work ethic and character. This is why HR recruiters follow up on references and do background checks. The applicant does not expect the HR recruiter to snoop around on various social networks and peer into the personal lives.
Secondly, I think the use of social networking for recruiting purposes is a poor method of assessing the true character and “job-fit” of the applicant. The information found on social networks is not indicative to the demeanor the applicant would display at the worksite. Social networks are for socializing. The language and style is relaxed and casual. This does not mean that the applicant would be incapable of demonstrating professional interactions on the job.
I do not currently belong to any social networks because I do not want my personal life and interactions with my friends to leave an indelible mark in cyberspace that will follow me for the rest of my life. What I think, feel and say now may change as I mature. Then again, maybe not. Either way, it is my business and has nothing to do with my employer or the way I would act on the job.
Although my opinion is that social networks should be considered private, unfortunately this is not a realistic expectation in today’s world. HR recruiters will continue to use social networks to assess applicants. They will also use Google to find out if applicants have other affiliations. Teachers are also encouraged to participate in social networks to “connect” with their students.
There is a push to change social networking privacy policies for the protection of minors. I think this momentum should continue for the sake of all social networking users.
The bigger issue here is the threat to our freedom of speech. Every time the expectation of privacy is taken away from us in any form, it slowly erodes our freedom. Until changes are made to our privacy policies, MySpace is Everyone’s Space. Students, applicants and social junkies must take caution in their tone. “Big Brother” is always listening.
